"Anamnesis" new exhibition by Marilyn Gaffney at Townhall Cavan

‘Anamnesis’, exhibition by Marilyn Gaffney at Townhall, Cavan

‘Anamnesis’ is the title of a new exhibition of work by Marilyn Gaffney.  Loosely translated the word anamnesis means a recollection of events, especially from a supposed past existence.

The themes Gaffney explores in this exhibition are time, space and memory. The art works are somewhere between fantasy and reality. The canvases are layered. They are complex and obsessively detailed. The artist combines traditional painting with digitally printed collage to create work that is some place between landscape and abstraction.

Marilyn Gaffney created the work in this exhibition while on the Bullock Lane Residency at Townhall, Cavan. The Bullock Lane Residency at Townhall Cavan is an initiative of Cavan County Council arts office and supported by the Arts Council. The town and the county of Cavan feature.  There is a series of charcoal drawings which include ‘Bullock Lane’, ‘Cathedral’, ‘Townhall’ and a sensitive study entitled ‘Maimie’ in which the sitter gazes inquiringly at us.

Rhonda Tidy in an essay entitled Back to Eden for the catalogue accompanying this exhibition by Marilyn Gaffney has written, “A deeper philosophical enquiry undercuts the aesthetic charm of her work, repeatedly revisiting themes of time, space, body in addressing the overarching theme of memory.”

Marilyn Gaffney has recently held solo exhibitions at The Watergate Gallery, Kilkenny and The Atrium Gallery Mullingar. She has exhibited in groups shows with Rianta, at the Backyard, Moynehall and as part of the Response to Beauty exhibition. In 2015 she curated an exhibition featuring twenty international works entitled Landscape and Memory which has toured to Cavan and Iran in 2015 and will visit British Columbia in 2016.

As a facilitator Gaffney works in a series of contexts including in 2015 with the sculptor Barry Linnane on his work entitled Pledge of the Metalmen and most recently on a project with Heather Brett entitled Beautiful and Natural Things Live Here with five national schools in County Cavan.

Anamnesis by Marilyn Gaffney opens at Townhall, Cavan on Thursday 3 March at 7pm. All are welcome. The exhibition continues until Thursday, 24 March, and will be open from 11am - 5pm, Wednesday - Saturday. See
