Windows Poetry Competition at Cavan Crystal Hotel

WINDOWS 24 STUDENT POETRY COMPETITION 2016

This year editors Heather Brett and Noel Monahan read over 1,000 entries in the Windows Publications Student Poetry Competition. The entries came from North, South, East and West of Ireland and over 350 people attended the ceremony of the presentation of prizes held in Cavan Crystal Hotel on Sunday 22nd. May. Catriona O’Reilly, County Cavan Arts Officer spoke glowingly of the contribution made by the editors to the promotion of poetry throughout Ireland. The event was attended also by Anne Marie Ward, County Cavan Heritage Officer and Sarah O’Reilly, Leas Cathaoirleach, Cavan County Council. Áine Cahill, singer and songwriter performed a selection of her work to rapturous applause.

As to be expected: 1916 featured a great deal in this year’s entries. Other poems dealt with topics like what shapes Ireland today, the increasing diversity of cultural life in Ireland, awareness of the feelings of others...

This year Windows Publications featured the Poetry and Art of the students in a new publication entitled: The Lonely Whale & Other Poems, 2016.
