“THE DAILY PATH OF MEMORY”
The images are part of an ongoing project relating to the past, which I refer to as a past before there was a past, somewhere in the far recesses of our memory lie that connection to the world of our childhoods. For me, visual connections come to mind and it is these that I am currently researching and re-creating: objects and photos that I have made into visual pieces.
These objects are ones associated with my Granny and it occurred to me that the reason for this choice was because being with Granny was associated with happiness, wonder, enjoyment and attachment.
The images are an exploration in depth of how an object ceases to be just a mirror or a teapot, but becomes symbolic and we can often remember things and they become symbols of a past that is lost and they become residuals.
I also chose carefully the method and materials for this project. I used the photo transfer method on to a silkscreen, making my own paper negatives, in a way that would recall the early pioneer methods.
The photo silkscreen is a magical medium for me, it has that ethereal quality and is neither a painting or a photograph, more like one step removed from the original and that is similar to how we visualise our memories.
The actual process is quite laborious and unpredictable but that is the beauty of printmaking. In this digital age, images are instant and this , was something I wished to get away from so I could connect to another time, for when I was growing up, photographs were only just merging into colour form.
