This painting is a part of a series of untitled paintings inspired by the Irish landscape. Earth, air and water, fiery torrents of energy sweep this giant canvas. A sense of frenetic movement is balanced by flatter areas of stillness and calm. Abstract planes are punctuated by recognisable features, such as a single flower. Rather than attempting to represent the quaint and rustic pastures of Ireland the series of paintings represent a symbolic, abstracted, almost universal expression of how it feels for the artist to stand within a landscape and bring his life's experience to bear upon it. Through his work Fitzpatrick calls to question the very notion of what exactly constitutes a landscape: is it a physical, moral, emotional or spiritual plane?
