Gulliver@300: Still Relevant After All These Years

As part of the Cultúr 2026 Programme, Cavan Arts invites the public to a special evening exploring the enduring legacy of one of the world's most celebrated literary works, Gulliver's Travels, as it marks 300 years since its first publication.

"Gulliver@300: Still Relevant After All These Years" will take place on Tuesday, 6 October, from 6.00 p.m. to 8.00 p.m. in Johnston Central Library, Cavan.

The event features a talk by acclaimed Swift scholar Dr Brendan Twomey. Poets Noel Monahan and Heather Brett will be featured in the night. Examining why Jonathan Swift's masterpiece continues to resonate with readers three centuries later. First published in 1726, Gulliver's Travels was an immediate success and has remained one of the most influential and widely read works in world literature ever since.

Through satire, humour and sharp social commentary, Swift explored themes of politics, power, human behaviour and society that remain remarkably relevant today. This engaging discussion will consider the book's lasting impact and explore how its observations on human nature continue to speak to contemporary audiences.

The event also forms part of the wider Gulliver@300 celebrations, recognising County Cavan's unique connection to Jonathan Swift. The celebrated writer spent time at Quilca, near Mullagh, where correspondence from 1725 reveals him working on what would become Gulliver's Travels.

Whether you are a lifelong admirer of Swift's work or simply curious about one of the greatest literary achievements in the English language, this promises to be a fascinating and thought-provoking evening.
