The Cavanoids Dance at Townhall Cavan
A troubling sound that has accumulated over many years suddenly stops. In the strange silence that follows new beings emerge from the depths of Shannon Pot.
In this experimental film you will experience the beauty of the Cavanoids, fictional creatures created by boredomresearch. The Cavanoids have been asleep in the rocks of the underworld for millions of years, during which time an insidious and disturbing sound has grown to fill the Cavan Burren. In the depths of Shannon Pot, their song can be heard as the waters become infused with a vitality carried, by this stream, from the world above. The inky waters now come alive with sparkling particles, a message from Manannán mac Lir, calling to awaken the sleeping Cavanoids.
boredomresearch
Cavan Arts Office hosted boredomresearch in the Cuilcagh Lakelands UNESCO Global Geopark for the River Residencies curated by Ormston House. boredomresearch is a collaboration between British artists Vicky Isley and Paul Smith. Inspired by natural environments, collectively they create artworks that explore the diversity that exists in nature and more recently the fragility of these ecosystems.
boredomresearch has been collaborating with world-leading science institutions since 2014, creating award-winning artwork, including projects exploring: natural systems, biodiversity, critically endangered and extinct species, environmental conservation, and human and animal diseases. Fascinated by human interaction with landscape, their artwork brings together innovative science, creative use of digital technology and a deep understanding of the complex interplay between human culture and natural systems.
The River Residencies are co-funded by the Arts Council’s An Invitation to Collaboration scheme, led by Limerick Culture & Arts Office in partnership with the Arts Offices in Cavan, Clare and Tipperary. The River Residencies are part of the Museum of Mythological Water Beasts (2017-), a multi-year project about, along and on the River Shannon curated by Ormston House.
The Cavanoids Dance was inspired by the Shannon Pot and surrounding area and informed by the expertise of the Geopark Ambassadors and the Staff at the Geopark. The Cavanoids Dance was launched on 22 September 2022 in association with Culture Night and continues until 4 November 2022 at Townhall, Cavan.
