Cavan Theatre Festival is a new, ambitious programme which will run from July 17th to 20th this year.
Cavan's New Theatre Festival was officially launched by Belfast actor Stephen Rea at the Abbey Theatre, Ireland’s National Theatre, during the celebrations of World Theatre Day on 27 March 2014.
Stephen Rae, who is a founding member of Derry’s Field Day Theatre and has a long association with the Abbey as well as collaborating with playwright Sam Shepherd. The festival will provide a professional platform for both emerging and touring productions to engage with the people of Cavan and its thriving theatre community.
Dermot Bolger’s play ‘Walking the Road’, commemorating the county’s connection with the Great War, will be part of the festival. Cavan man Aaron Monaghan, who has achieved success at The Abbey and the Druid Theatre Company, (and is co-founder of Virginia’s Livin Dred Theatre Company), will star in the inaugural programme.
Actor/writer Shane Connaughton, who is probably best known as co-writer of the Academy Award-nominated screenplay for ‘My Left Foot’ as well as the film ‘The Playboys’, will perform a short reading to celebrate theatre and his home county of Cavan.
