Obscure Visions

Press Release: Extending the Visual Arts Fringe at Cavan Fleadh Cheoil 2011, Obscure Visions is an exhibition of contemporary art, including printmaking, drawing, video and sculpture, that provides a feast for the eyes and food for thought! Artists involved are from the border regions of Cavan, Monaghan, Louth and Leitrim and have been engaged in an ongoing project called Seeing
Across Boundaries, supported by the Peace III Program and led by Canadian artist Sylvia Grace Borda.

A precursor to photography and surveillance technology, the Camera Obscura was used by artists, from the Renaissance to the Victorian era, to observe and record the natural and built environment. Drawing on its history and techniques as a method of observation and scientific exploration and with an understanding of the contemporary political, geographical and cultural climates of the border regions, each artist has developed a personal and powerful response to this particular place in these obscure times.

Some of the works on exhibition include a haunting video piece by local performance artist Sally O’Dowd that speaks of consumer-society, transaction, production and the human body and striking photograms by Leitirm-based artist and researcher Christine Mackey that scientifically capture the fragile flora of the border areas.

Obscure Visions is curated by local artist Yvonne Cullivan and compliments Cavan Obscura, a visual-audio touring experience created by local artist Siobhan Harton for Cavan Fleadh Cheoil 2011.
