Announcing Five Recipients
Five artists were selected for the 2017 Professional Development Award which was recently adjudicated by an independent panel for Cavan County Council. The Arts Office offers financial support on an annual basis to Cavan artists practicing in any art-form or working in a collaborative context through a competitive process called the Professional Development Award.
The award of €2,000 to each of the selected artists will help them develop work that will enhance their careers. This project is supported by the revenue grant from the Arts Council which received a 4% increase in 2017 bringing the total funding to €49,214. This particular project supports artist to live and work in County Cavan and to contribute to the local society.
Nineteen artists applied for this funding and the five successful artists are:
Robbie Perry, musician
Rosarie Mc Hugh, visual artist
Michelle Boyle, visual artist
Maria Bagnoli, visual artist
Kate Ennals, writer
The standard of application was particularly high in 2017. Robbie Perry is working to create an installation called the Electro-Mechanical Orchestra that will deliver an immersive musical experience through creating an artistically designed Step Sequencer.
Michelle Boyle is building her international reputation with a new body of work on her mixed race heritage with exhibitions planned for Ireland and India.
Rosarie Mc Hugh has recently returned to live in County Cavan and is working on a new body of work for exhibition with the underlying theme of connectivity and response to the landscape and the differences in the rural and urban landscape. She works in drawing, photography and collage.
Maria Bagnoli continues to work on a memory inspired project to create a series of silkscreen images and video work for exhibition.
Kate Ennals has engaged a highly respected writer to support her editing skills in order to publish a collection of short stories that she has written.
The arts office provided support with a presentation by Mary Mc Auliffe, independent arts consultant who provided an information session to twenty nine artists prior to the closing date. A number of the attendees took the opportunity to discuss their proposed work with Mary Mc Auliffe on a one to one session and found this helpful to their application writing skills. Artists are encouraged to seek national funding opportunities through the Arts Council and Create. The Arts Council website provides valuable information for artists in relation to support and progression.
