Suibhne Faoi Bhodhrán Ghealaí – Sweeney Under a Full Moon

“Sweeney Under A Full Moon”, is an original re-imagining of the medieval Irish work, “Buile Suibhne”. According to the legend, St. Ronan banished King Sweeney to the trees to live as a wild bird and he now inhabits the In-Between-Realm of his imagination awaiting redemption. This collaboration between the poet Noel Monahan and the composer Paul Flynn will be brought to live through music and voice. The musicians include: David Bremner (Organ) Dublin,Niamh McCormack (Soprano) Cavan,Liz Hilliard (Soprano) Dublin, Helen Byrne (Soprano) Dublin, Ciara Flynn (fiddle/violin) Cavan and Evin O'Meara (bodhran) Cavan.

The poem is written in modern Irish with an English translation by Noel Monahan. Noel is an award winning poet and playwright and has been honoured by the ASTI and Longford County Council for his contribution to arts education. Paul Flynn is an accomplished composer who won the Christ Church Cathedral Festival Composition Competition in 2006, and has a particular interest in writing for the voice and choral music.

Suibhne Faoi Bhodhrán Ghealaí ‘Sweeney Under A Full Moon will be premiered at the Fleadh Ceoil na hÉireann in Cavan, August 2012. The poem will be published in “An Guth” by editor Rody Gorman.

This promises to be an afternoon rich in synergy. The wonderful new music accompanying this re imagining will reverberate in the Kilmore Catherdral. The story will unfold through song and poetry, in Irish and English. Kilmore is the resting place of Bishop Bedell who first translated the bible into Irish. The story flits between Scotland and Ireland as Sweeney’s banishment brings him through the Scots and Gaelic realms. This music and story celebrates the human condition in particular isolation and banishment and ultimately redemption. Sweeney Abú.
