The Tyrone Guthrie Artist Bursary

The Tyrone Guthrie Centre at Annaghmakerrig is a residential workplace for artists, dedicated to supporting and facilitating creativity within a welcoming, home-like and trusted environment.

In Annaghmakerrig artists can find peace and quiet to develop their work, together with the stimulation of living alongside other artists from all disciplines, enabling a rich cross-fertilization of ideas. This bursary is ideal for artists who need a quiet space to work but also consider that they will benefit from the stimulation of working in close proximity to artists from many disciplines.

Rikki van den Berg, painter based in Milltown said of her experience on the Bursary in 2016 “Annaghmakerrig is all about supporting artists and Robert Mc Donald and all the staff work to provide a friendly, family environment for artists to work, to share ideas and challenge themselves and each other.”

The recipients for ‘The Tyrone Guthrie Award 2017’ are as follows:

Orla Galligan, Shannow, Cavan

Orla will work on a body of art documenting a response to personal trauma.

She will use her time in Annaghmakerrig to express and respond to a very personal experience that has influenced her direction and work as an artist.  Orla is skilled in a wide range of media including painting, print making, sculpture, installation, ceramics and collage and will be using a number of these to create a body of work, which she plans to exhibit at galleries both nationally and internationally.   Orla is a past recipient of the Bullock Lane Residency from Cavan County Council and held an exhibition at Bullock Lane in 2013, she also ran workshops for adults and young people as part of her residency.

Maurice Fitzpatrick, Belturbet, Cavan

Maurice will work on his book project on the life and times of John Hume and in particular his work on the Peace process and his many relationships with prominent American figures that supported building peace.   He has just completed a documentary feature film, ‘In the Name of Peace’: John Hume in America. Narrated by Liam Neeson, the film illuminates the steady leadership of John Hume. The film includes wide-ranging interviews with President Clinton, President Jimmy Carter, British Prime Ministers John Major and Tony Blair, as well as many US senators, Congressmen, and Irish leaders.   Maurice has previously worked with Kevin Mc Cann from Macanna Teoranta on ‘The Boys from St Columb’s.  The work will be launched with the Department of the Taoiseach and the Department of Foreign Affairs in late autumn 2017.

This opportunity is made possible by Cavan County Council arts office with the support of The Arts Council.
