Cavan County Council: Outright Winners 2014 Providing Services to the Arts

Cavan County Council is delighted to receive the Public Sector Magazine Award for Providing Services to the Arts 2014. The arts service works with and for the arts community.

‘Our website www.cavanarts.ie swung the jury in our favour. They said that it is a tool that supports two way communication, in that it communicates for the arts office, the artist and those interested in being involved in this community irrespective of where they are,’ according to Catriona O Reilly, Arts Officer.

Working together Daniel Peeters, IT, Rhonda Tidy, Public Art Manager and Kerrie Duffy developed the website to be primarily visual and straight-forward, profiling Cavan projects and events and promoting local and national opportunities. The staff of the arts office: Joanne Gorman, Marilyn Gaffney and Catriona O Reilly also update the website.  Una Mc Entee, HR also supports social media and communication in various platforms. Staff are delighted that some individual artists and groups take ownership of their own information and events on the website. Café Sessions for example regularly update the website with details of their music sessions.

‘We consider partnership to be essential to our work developing the arts’ according to Catriona O Reilly. The County Council has a long term partnership with the Arts Council who provides funding for the arts in Cavan. The arts office has a number of specific projects that supported the development of the arts in Cavan in 2014.  These included projects such as 'Developing Creative Practice Across Borders' where 33 artists travelled to experience job placements in European host organizations. The newly appointed project co-ordinator, Joe Keenan will investigate networking and showcasing for the artists to consolidate learning and career opportunities arising out of these experiences.

Building Peace through the Arts project work has taken place in Cootehill, Bailieborough, Ballyconnell and Redhills. This project was organized in partnership with the Social Inclusion Unit and funded through the Arts Council of Northern Ireland. Each of the communities in question engaged in artist facilitation workshops and continue to work on securing an artist to provide a piece of public art in their area.

Ark 1x1, was a key partnership project with 'The Ark' and twelve National Schools in the county in 2014. This immersive art project was facilitated by Eimear Crowe, assisted by Helen Foy and access to the expertise of professionals at The Ark was enriching for everyone involved in the work. It culminated with an exhibition at Johnston Central Library of the thirteen contemporary artists along with work from the children’s notebooks created over the course of the school year.

Eoin Doyle, Director of Services said that the Council is delighted to receive the award. ‘I believe that the wider arts community can take credit for their work in developing the arts. Personally I was impressed with the vision and dedication of Cavan Theatre Festival and the way the committee and volunteers worked with excellence to ensure a fantastic experience for audience and artist alike’.

Chief Executive Ger Finn, was equally impressed with the input of the arts community. ‘For me the recent Culture Night was a revelation, I visited ‘In the Current’, public art project by Yvonne Cullivan and was impressed with the art and the audience. I thoroughly enjoyed Healy Times at 61 College St, and was delighted that the Minister Heather Humphreys visited this work. I was only sorry I couldn’t attend more of the events.’
